ENOUGH IS A PRECIOUS FEAST

Wisdom-1

In a gentle way you can shake the world.” ~Mahatma Gandhi

Attending to life is a sacred act of love.

A few weeks ago I visited my home town of San Diego, California in the beach area of Ocean Beach/Point Loma where I was born, raised and brought three sons into the world – with the purpose of spending time with family still living there.

It was like living my life backwards with so many memories arising as I walked my old haunts and the hard packed sand at the waters edge.  On one of these walks I reflected on my entry experience at the airport a day before.

Since it had been decades since I flew into San Diego I found the airport not only larger, but more complex in an organized way.  One of the improvements being that car rentals were now in one building in back of the airport.  To reach this building one needed to ride the 11-minute shuttle to get there.

As the door opened for the shuttle bus I was to ride a beautiful African American woman stepped down from the front of the bus onto the sidewalk with a huge smile on her face and greeted us all with an immense inviting and loving energy, calling us precious as she took our luggage and lifted it into the designated spots within the bus.

As another woman sat down next to me she turned and with a smile on her face said to me, “I’ve never been called precious before!”  In just that one gentle way our bus driver had opened up and connected this woman to herself and to me.

It did not stop there!  Once the bus was loaded and the driver had greeted everyone and stowed their luggage we were under way to the car rental building.  As you know, travel can be stressful and sometimes the purpose of individual’s travel can run the gamut from vacation to attending to immense challenges they may be faced with.

The driver greeted us on the PA system, asked how all of us were doing – waiting for our responses, and then proceeded to tell us a little about San Diego and what we were passing by on our short journey.

In the silence that followed this everyone on the bus all of a sudden started hearing  oldies songs, like Moon River, that were whistled over the speaker system…..by our entertaining bus drive.  And she was good!

Following that she invited us to sing children’s songs that she probably sang with her grandchildren, and which most everyone on the bus had sung as a child.  We went the gamut from “The Wheels on the Bus Go Round & Round” to “Row, Row, Row Your Boat” and finally to “Old MacDonald Had a Farm” (with animal suggestions from her captive audience) .

Next on the agenda she challenged anyone who wanted to participate to say tongue twisters with her….and one man from New Zealand standing on the bus with a very large box took it on and succeeded with the most lovely accent!

At this point we were just about to our destination. As I looked around all of the passengers were smiling and connecting with each other.  The entire energy on the bus had changed.  We were connected and enjoying the few moments it took us to get to our destination, the stress of travel forgotten.

As everyone stepped down from the bus our driver handed us our luggage from where it was stowed with a huge smile.  I thanked her for such an entertaining and community connected trip with a shared connected smile.

This woman had engaged us in the short moments we were all together and created something extraordinary from a job and 11 minutes together that could have been quite ordinary simply getting us where we needed to be.

Enough was indeed a feast!

When we as women question whether we are good enough, or simply enough, we are caught in the entanglement of either cultures expectations, or our very own patterns and perfectionism.

What would it be like to simply let go of those expectations, a diagnosis, labels or identities –  and discover who we are as extraordinary, empowered and creative beings in our fullest expressions in any given ordinary moment?

Perhaps we shall find that in honoring our “being enough” it takes us from the ordinary to the extraordinary.

Shake the World Sistah and create a feast!

TODAY I RISE!

As I Sing I Rise Today_1

https://vimeo.com/122762336

The first time I viewed this video I was most certainly taken by the beauty of the images and the prose.  Even captivated by the woman’s voice that held the hint of being from some “exotic” place.

But what took me down into the deeper reaches of my soul as a woman was something that remained a little more challenging to articulate.  Tears welled up every time I watched this and the “why?” somewhat escaped coming to form in language for awhile.

But then I felt it in my cells….an emergence of the feminine – in myself and all women across the globe – in a way and form that this sacred planet we live upon is ever whispering to each and every one of us no matter where we live or what situation and circumstances we find ourselves in.

Rising up….EMERGING….as interconnected feminine power, creativity, wisdom, and courageousness within each of our unique structures of being.

And what made me weep was the knowing that we are not alone in this rising up.  We never have to be alone as we mine the depths of who we are – our calling and purpose, our vision and creative outpourings – and through that congruent alignment automatically create a space for other women (and men) to move towards us and touch in for awhile….or a lifetime.  To collaborate, inspire, hold and vision…..united in taking effective action from a space of Being.

I invite you to watch this video daily for 21 days and embody it’s message.  Listen deeply to what is wanting to emerge from within…..and take a step directly into the heart of it and then out into your life and the world!

Keep The Channel Open

Miki Orihara in Martha Graham’s Embattled Garden

Miki Orihara in Martha Graham’s Embattled Garden

“There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all of time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and it will be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is nor how valuable nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open. You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep yourself open and aware to the urges that motivate you. Keep the channel open.”
Martha Graham

My hand lifts to receive the pressure and direction of another’s hand. Waiting, perhaps only micro seconds, until the sensation in my body informs me of what movement is next, what action will unfold me towards the next stage of this journey.

There is no thinking here, simply deep listening and following the rhythm of the music, my partners energy, and sensations direction – unfolding effortlessly in tune with the operation of life now.

Is there language here? Yes. The conversations of my body. Absolutely trusting this language of biology to lead me into the next action, the next subtle or active movement.

A sensation triggers a thought which translates into motion all in a fraction of time so fast that it seems like nothing and eternity all rolled into one. Timeless.

Freedom through surrender to the flow of life. Our lives. Our expression.

This experience is one I have often on the ecstatic dance/contact improv dance floor. More often it is an experience I am having in everyday life – in relationships, livelihood/calling, collaborations, finances…..all the domains of life.

Certainly there are many places where blockage/resistance appears, yet the declaration to stay embodied, and operate from that space, supports return to a fluid passage through even the rough spots.

Having just finished a very powerful journey through the landscapes of nature in Tree Sister’s sponsored 6-week teleclass with Mary Reynolds Thompson, author of Reclaiming Your Wild Soul, I have been reminded of how precious and unique each woman’s uncensored expression is to the world…and to herself.

Unique as there is no other like it.

Precious because the world requires the gifts we have been uniquely structured to bring this lifetime.

And if we withhold, this wild untamed expression that can only be channeled through each one of us….will indeed be lost forever.

I for one have often held back and hid behind cultures background conversations that women were not supposed to show up in their “naked” expression. To even be “ashamed” of it….or worse lose their life for it.

Perhaps there were ancient lifetimes that laid down cellular memory with the innate danger of speaking out, moving to the rhythm of creative expression, or even standing tall or taking action on what is most important to us.

But now, now we are called to be midwives to the shift and transformation that is shaking this Earth we call home. Midwives to saying yes to opening the doors, windows – bodies and voices of our heart and soul.

11828629_10207381262549008_131282233859083123_nA time to crack open the cages we have placed ourselves in. To remove the bars to our self-imposed prisons. To collaborate, connect with and support other women in doing the same.

What we do with this most precious of expressions is up to us. How we shall bring it, or not, is a choice that each of us must sit with before taking action.

In that moment of reckoning when the soft dark cave of invisibility draws you ever deeper – listen to the sensations that are embodied in that moment and follow the energy that is calling you forth.

Leading with fear of dismemberment…..or choosing nourishment

for the soul’s calling?

Wild Soul Woman

A Wild Soul Woman is rooted, powerful, authentic,

~Mary Reynolds Thompson

I have always, since a small child, resonated with the natural world around me.  It simply felt an extension of myself, deeply connected to the Source of my being.  This sacred connection has continued on into adulthood.  I expect that it will always be there right up to that last embodied transition into death.

Returning  back into the Earth,  encouraging other life into creation.

Without this connection nothing makes sense!

This is why I was thrilled to recently read Reclaiming The Wild Soul by Mary Reynolds Thompson.  The content of this book gathers it’s impact from a very large contextual space.  A space returning us to nature’s landscapes that hold, nourish and inform us of who we are in every moment of our lives, and intimately connect us to the elements that we are made from.

An Invitation to Return Home

download-phpReclaiming the Wild Soul: How Earth’s Landscapes Restore Us To Wholeness by Mary Reynolds Thompson

Delving into the wildness of this poetic prose of a book brought me “home”. Home to the elements that make up the “wild being” of who and what I am. The elements of Earth’s scared natural world, calling out to us so powerfully at this time in our planet’s history to come back “home” to the inner landscapes of our wild souls – reconnecting and communing in ways that shift the delicate balance back from the ego’s domestication, taming and destructive actions – into a natural state of cohabiting harmony in intimate and deep listening relationship with the Earth.

I could not stop reading this exquisitely powerful book, and am now on my second read through, stopping to ponder and inhabit the landscapes and the words that flow through me onto the journal page. At times I was reminded of John O’Donohue’s writing that draws us in to a much larger context from a place of simply Being. It is not just a “healing” that needs to happen here, but a complete return to absolute devotion to the wild landscapes and elements that bring us life with every breath we take. Mary Reynolds Thompson has brilliantly succeeded in opening that space for us to explore within and without, guiding us to take effective and conscious action from the wildness of all life – from the depths of our souls.

Soul Musings/Day 31: Reflections on Listening to Soul

Gaye in Bali, Indonesia/Global Healing Conference

Gaye in Bali, Indonesia/Global Healing Conference

Those who don’t feel this Love
pulling them like a river,
those who don’t drink dawn
like a cup of spring water
or take in sunset like supper,
those who don’t want to change,

let them sleep.

This Love is beyond the study of theology,
that old trickery and hypocrisy.
If you want to improve your mind that way,

sleep on.

I’ve given up on my brain.
I’ve torn the cloth to shreds
and thrown it away.

If you’re not completely naked,
wrap your beautiful robe of words
around you,

and sleep.

– Rumi

For those of you that may have been following these Soul Musings for the past 31 days I express my gratitude. In total there have been 93 posts including today’s which is rather unbelievable to me as I was ready to quit it all on Day 5!

True to form there will only be 8 sentences here (though the one following is indeed a very long one!) with the last two being specific to this particular blog. I have experienced many things as I have committed to this practice and among them have been the fickleness of the creative muse; the release in simply writing something and then letting it go; observing the critic that wanted to take main stage but whom I banished to the netherlands (where is that anyway?); the groundedness of a regular writing practice; at times the self-imposed pressure of hitting that “Publish” button every single day on 3 blogs; allowing for the polarity of “good writing” and “bad writing” to vanish from my vocabulary; that there would be “something to write about” every single day, but more, trusting that I would listen to what was coming through and simply act as the translator on behalf of full uncensored expression.

When I was urged from the depths of my Soul – from Source – to commit to this practice I was at first certain of it and then wanted to flee from the implications of it. The months of going without writing anything prior to this practice have now fled into oblivion (would love to know where that is too!) and I am washed clean of any hesitation to simply write from the deepest parts of my being.

This was my favorite blog to post on though I probably shouldn’t divulge that! I will forever be an advocate on behalf of embodiment as an untamed woman, free to fully express safely, creatively and passionately, in this sacred life we have been given.

NAMASTE

Soul Musings/Day 27: The Catalyst of “Failure”

courage

As the year draws to an end many of us are aware of shifts in our personal lives and certainly planetary. The thoughts of “success or failure” within these shifts takes us into a polarity that isn’t particularly helpful.

As Oprah says in the video below, “Failure is there to point you in a different direction” and it is most often not fatal. Impermanence makes certain that success is never final.

Thus the life continuum that holds a myriad of experiences opens possibilities for the next steps along our life’s path. Without each one of them we would not be willing to embody the courage to walk a little more to where we are called or be who we are today.

As we step into the uncertainty, as Cheryl Strayed did in the recent movie “Wild”, we see how much of a catalyst  “failure” can be. As she reaches her goal and “succeeds” at the end of her hike along the 1,000 miles of the PCT she finds in deep reflection that it is all a continuum…..a continuum that brings us exactly to the place we are in this moment elegantly unfolding the next set of life possibilities.

Soul Musings/Day 24: Conscious Language and Possibility

th

Our words reveal our inner journey of life.  The more conscious we become of our speaking, the more consciousness itself becomes aware of what we are manifesting moment to moment. Once you wake up to your sovereignty over your thinking and speaking, you set yourself apart from the unconsciousness of culture.  People will notice you speak and act differently and want  to follow you. You model for your outer world the presence of presence itself. ” Patty Shull

Language is not only vital for communication and connection, but is pivotal to our ability to live fully congruent within our calling this lifetime, supporting effective action from emerging possibilities.

Many of us have had the experience of attempting to communicate when we are stressed or personally triggered (ego in charge) and everything “goes to hell” very quickly.

This language fortifies the “what about me” conversation and we find ourselves in the dumpster of right/wrong, good/bad while encouraging the “mired in ego” feeling of separateness.

On the other hand when we feel rested, relaxed and at peace within, this foundation of stillness brings thoughts and words that are clear and centered arising from a deeper part of us – our Being.

Some call this latter conversation “language of the heart”. These conversations deepen stillness, are connective and open spaces for possibility to emerge.

As the consciousness of our world shifts enough can’t be said about the vital importance of language and the conversations we engage in.

How our conversations feel in the body is key and will help to distinguish whether they are connective and congruent supporting effective action, or separate with a bottom line of ego enhancement cutting off possibility…..the choice is yours.

Soul Musings/Day 17: Lit From Within

lit_candles_1_1280x960

Holding the families, children that have died and yes the perpetrators in Peshawar in a space of peace as I light candles this morning on their behalf.

Feeling helpless to remedy terrorism leaves us bereft as we reflect on what we can do to shift the pain and suffering of all concerned and effective actions we can take to heal this wound in our world.

The women in the video link below – Strength Within – have taken a pledge to heal themselves and pass that healing and wholeness on to others who may need it.

It may be that taking action from a place of commitment to wholeness of Being changes the landscape of violence within and is then passed to others through awareness and practice of this self-love.

Everyone has the same need, even if deep inside, to be loved and accepted, happy and healthy. Where is the opening for someone who is lost in the violence of terrorism?

It is not simple.

Yet it starts with you….

Soul Musings/Day 6: The Erotic Lightness of Being

spring2

I want to eat the sunbeam flaring in your lovely body…
and I pace around hungry, sniffing the twilight,
hunting for you, for your hot heart,
like a puma in the barrens of Quitratue.
~Pablo Neruda, translated from Spanish by Stephen Tapscott

Did you know there is an erotic lightness shining through every cell of your Being

tempestuously striding as energy lightning

Of your Soul’s reminder to drink in every drop of sweet sensation

That life and love bestow upon your embodied journey here

Did you know that Light is erotic when opened to with desire

Feasting upon the unfolding uncertainty

With an illuminated vulnerability in Being

That wild creature of Nature that sensuously awakens into life as You….

Risk or Possibility?

Anaisquote

RISK OR POSSIBILITY?

I don’t know about you, but when I hear the word “risk” I often feel a physical reaction in my body. My stomach clamps down just a little, my breath stops or becomes shallow, and my shoulders and jaw tense.

Upon looking it up in Wikipedia I found there were two definitions that drew my attention:

1) “Risk is the potential of losing something of value. Values (such as physical health, social status, emotional well being or financial wealth) can be gained or lost when taking risk resulting from a given action, activity and/or inaction, foreseen or unforeseen.”

2) “Risk can also be defined as the intentional interaction with uncertainty.”

The first definition puts the emphasis on loss by the very first sentence. It makes up for it in the last sentence, but you are left with the overall feeling of potentially “losing something”.

The second definition makes it an effective action that you take with full attention and letting go, or surrendering, into the relationship with uncertainty. This could also be called trusting what is unfolding.

This last brings more spaciousness in the body, whereas the first one could provoke the reaction of clamping down preparing for “battle with the powers that be”. A relationship with uncertainty seems to exist every moment of our lives no matter how much we might wish to control things. It could be seen as the very nature of existence.

Having dedicated the 66th year of my life to “living fearlessly” during a ritual standing in the waters of the Pacific ocean in July, the ever present “risks” are now seen as a vehicle for opportunity and possibility. That isn’t to say that my old patterns of “security” and “survival” don’t show up, but at least they have a louder voice that I can hear versus the stealth maneuvers they have done in the past.

An example of this showed up this past Sunday morning during my Gentle Yoga with Keith at Dharma Yoga here in Austin. Now this class could be seen as a “risk” unto itself as one never quite knows what the focus of the class will be or what the practice will hold. Rather like life…..thank you Keith!

This day the class was focused on risk and exploring edges…. was definitely not all that gentle, and supplied a multitude of opportunities to choose to move into edges or “stay safe”.

The peak of the class for me was in a two partner assist where we were to choose between two poses to be assisted and supported in. One was something that I knew I could do easily and though may take me into some new territory, was definitely not a “risk”.

The other one was a pose that I hadn’t done for years as it takes upper body strength to push into from the floor, which I have let go of as I have aged. There was no going back and forth between the two in the decision making process.

5350316_l-1024x652I knew immediately that the assisted wheel (from standing into a backbend arch coming down with hands on the floor) was to be the one by the energy flow that moved through me when I considered them.

As I felt my two assistants attempt to support me in the best way they knew how I put my total attention on the movement of my spine and the breath. Suddenly there was another pair of hands assisting (my teacher Keith) which created spaciousness for me to celebrate coming into this pose with relative ease and mindful movement.

In those moments a space opened up within. It wasn’t only being in the pose, but the additional after effects from trusting the moment to moment movement of my body, the breath guiding me, and the hands and hearts assisting me.

The joy that I felt and the opening of spaces within spilled over to my assistants who greeted me with brilliant smiles as I came up out of the pose.

Now as some of you know I practice as a yoga teacher/therapist thus in this “risk” I was asked to move out of the “personal” (proving that I know what I am doing, the realm of good/bad, right/wrong, etc..) and instead trust that the unfolding would take me where I was to go.

Let’s just say that is a MUCH LARGER space to play and blossom in!
