Soul Musings/Day 19: Soul Nature

10351582_10205371727670589_2934955949299492690_n

Take a journey into the wilderness within

Stopping here and there to fall into the spaces

That have brought you here into this particular body

To this calling that prods, conjoles and romances you

Until you throw up your arms in surrender

And say yes, yes, yes….this is why I am here

How could I veer so far away with made up stories

When the unfolding moment constantly reveals

who I am – listen….

Soul Musings/Day 16: Surrender Dorothy!

wizard_of_oz_001

This is one of those days that all I want to do is stay inside (the weather is gorgeous outside), eat popcorn and watch period drama romances on PBS. I am inquiring of my Soul -”What’s up with this?!” – but there is complete and absolute silence.

The ego conversations would have me “bucking up” and “getting on with it” because what do I think I am doing anyway….absolutely nothing! I am not accomplishing a thing and there is so much to prepare for the New Year coming etc etc etc. (imagine Yul Brynner as the King of Siam saying that in the movie The King and I – oh, guess that dates me)

It is in these times that I wish my Soul was a little more vocal to provide some guidance here and there, but guess what it is still, you guessed it, silently resting. So the question is what would Dorothy do in the Wizard of Oz?

She finally did have to surrender to the Wicked Witch, but look what she learned along the way, with the outcome of an expanded consciousness to boot. Surrendering to what the space is asking of you may just put some ruby slippers on your feet!

Soul Musings/Day 15: Express Love Now

This video touched me deeply. Every mother might wonder what kind of decision their children would make if it was a life or death choice.

In the few seconds that this young man had to make that decision it was a death and rebirth experience as his entire life passed before him and he realized how much his mother had given.

That he was able to lay next to his mother and speak these words of love and appreciation was the most important gift he could have given not only her, but himself, in those last few moments of her life.

As we enter fully into the final days of this year let us remember that the greatest gift we can give to each other is exactly this.

Paying attention to what we are receiving from others on a constant basis brings us opportunity to express our gratitude and love.

Paying attention to what the mother Earth is giving to us – our LIFE – on a daily basis and taking actions to enhance this living systems thriving is more than an opportunity.

It is a promise ….

Soul Musings/Day 12: Even For Just A Moment

Kindness

Today begin as so many other days – with gratitude for all that I have and dedication to live the moments with love. What the day returned to me was kindness and insight.

An e-mail revealed that a friend had gifted me money into one of my accounts. This was unexpected and based on my simply being who I am in the world.

Taking this awareness with me to the post office to mail Christmas packages I noticed how kind people were being to each other in line, going the extra distance to assist customers, and opening doors for those with packages in hand.

As I headed for my car there was a woman with packages piled high on top of her car and of course only two arms to carry them. My two arms were added as I went back into the post office with some of her packages.

Even for just a moment simply Be who you are…..living in love.

Risk or Possibility?

Anaisquote

RISK OR POSSIBILITY?

I don’t know about you, but when I hear the word “risk” I often feel a physical reaction in my body. My stomach clamps down just a little, my breath stops or becomes shallow, and my shoulders and jaw tense.

Upon looking it up in Wikipedia I found there were two definitions that drew my attention:

1) “Risk is the potential of losing something of value. Values (such as physical health, social status, emotional well being or financial wealth) can be gained or lost when taking risk resulting from a given action, activity and/or inaction, foreseen or unforeseen.”

2) “Risk can also be defined as the intentional interaction with uncertainty.”

The first definition puts the emphasis on loss by the very first sentence. It makes up for it in the last sentence, but you are left with the overall feeling of potentially “losing something”.

The second definition makes it an effective action that you take with full attention and letting go, or surrendering, into the relationship with uncertainty. This could also be called trusting what is unfolding.

This last brings more spaciousness in the body, whereas the first one could provoke the reaction of clamping down preparing for “battle with the powers that be”. A relationship with uncertainty seems to exist every moment of our lives no matter how much we might wish to control things. It could be seen as the very nature of existence.

Having dedicated the 66th year of my life to “living fearlessly” during a ritual standing in the waters of the Pacific ocean in July, the ever present “risks” are now seen as a vehicle for opportunity and possibility. That isn’t to say that my old patterns of “security” and “survival” don’t show up, but at least they have a louder voice that I can hear versus the stealth maneuvers they have done in the past.

An example of this showed up this past Sunday morning during my Gentle Yoga with Keith at Dharma Yoga here in Austin. Now this class could be seen as a “risk” unto itself as one never quite knows what the focus of the class will be or what the practice will hold. Rather like life…..thank you Keith!

This day the class was focused on risk and exploring edges…. was definitely not all that gentle, and supplied a multitude of opportunities to choose to move into edges or “stay safe”.

The peak of the class for me was in a two partner assist where we were to choose between two poses to be assisted and supported in. One was something that I knew I could do easily and though may take me into some new territory, was definitely not a “risk”.

The other one was a pose that I hadn’t done for years as it takes upper body strength to push into from the floor, which I have let go of as I have aged. There was no going back and forth between the two in the decision making process.

5350316_l-1024x652I knew immediately that the assisted wheel (from standing into a backbend arch coming down with hands on the floor) was to be the one by the energy flow that moved through me when I considered them.

As I felt my two assistants attempt to support me in the best way they knew how I put my total attention on the movement of my spine and the breath. Suddenly there was another pair of hands assisting (my teacher Keith) which created spaciousness for me to celebrate coming into this pose with relative ease and mindful movement.

In those moments a space opened up within. It wasn’t only being in the pose, but the additional after effects from trusting the moment to moment movement of my body, the breath guiding me, and the hands and hearts assisting me.

The joy that I felt and the opening of spaces within spilled over to my assistants who greeted me with brilliant smiles as I came up out of the pose.

Now as some of you know I practice as a yoga teacher/therapist thus in this “risk” I was asked to move out of the “personal” (proving that I know what I am doing, the realm of good/bad, right/wrong, etc..) and instead trust that the unfolding would take me where I was to go.

Let’s just say that is a MUCH LARGER space to play and blossom in!

She Let Go

letting_go

SHE LET GO ~By Rev. Safire Rose~ “She let go. Without a thought or a word, she let go. She let go of the fear. She let go of the judgments. She let go of the committee of indecision within her. She let go of all the right reasons. Wholly and completely, without hesitation or worry, she let go. She didn’t ask anyone for advice. She didn’t read a book on how to let go. She didn’t search the scriptures. She just let go. She let go of all the memories that held her back. She let go of all the anxiety that kept her from moving forward. She let go of the planning and all of the calculations about how to do it just right. She didn’t promise to let go. She didn’t journal about it. She didn’t write the projected date in her Day Timer. She made no public announcement and put no ad in the paper. She didn’t check the weather report or read her daily horoscope. She just let go. She didn’t analyze whether she should let go. She didn’t call her friends to discuss the matter. She didn’t utter one word. She just let go. No one was around when it happened. There was no applause or congratulations. No one thanked her or praised her. No one noticed a thing. Like a leaf falling from a tree, she just let go. There was no effort. There was no struggle. It wasn’t good. It wasn’t bad. It was what it was and it is just that. In the space of letting go, she let it be. A small smile came over her face. A light breeze blew through her. And the sun and the moon shone for evermore.”

th-1

How often in our lives do we strive for the answer or struggle to push onward when everything in us wants to surrender? Surrender meaning not “giving up”, but instead resting in the place of strength and courage that it takes simply to let go and find out what is underneath all of the striving, angst, control and fear.

The quote above reminds me of how awareness can expand and possibilities arise once the walls come down and the striving and struggle stops.  Once the ego stops fueling the mind and the quest for answers becomes something that is less for security and more for being willing to rest in and act from the being of who we are.  Trusting that being…

I remember a very powerful dream that I had quite some years ago during a time that I was teetering on the edge of simply letting go or hacking my way through the challenges that presented and proving to myself that “I could do it”. In this dream I was walking with many others along a trail out in nature and we were all traveling towards a “university of higher learning and knowing”.

I noticed that some had come with equipment – ropes, backpacks and such – and was curious about why.  As we drew closer to being able to see the “University” in the distance we came to an abrupt halt where the path apparently 139710067ended and a cliff with a very steep drop was right before us.  I watched as others put on climbing gear and started repelling down the dangerous slope.  A few fell, others became injured and many made it down to continue on their journey.

As I stood at the cliff side filled with fear and indecision about whether I wanted to go on or not and if so how I would go about it,  my thoughts hit a point of stillness, a full breath arose, and I was guided to look to my left.  There in full view was a continuation of the path which meandered through the forest out into open valley and right to the doors of the “University”.

Sometimes we are challenged to strengthen the knowing of who we are by moving through obstacles and barriers in our lives.  When these challenges become a means to “prove ourselves”, versus inhabit ourselves more fully, then there is a decision to make.  In this dream I made the decision to take the path to the left.

Not out of fear of the challenges on the cliff side or having to prove that I could do it, but out of a place of letting go into my breath, into the moment and being curious enough to wait and see what would unfold.  There is no right or wrong decision to have made in this dream….and perhaps you will find even deeper meaning for yourself….yet it was in simply letting go and becoming curious that it became clear what my choice was to be.

….and the sun and the moon shone forever more.

The Dark Night of the Soul

20130810-132104

Taken by GreenMackenzie@BreathofGreenAir – Scotland

It may seem strange to have such an incredibly beautiful image to grace a post that has this title.  However I am finding that when one drops down (or is taken down) into the depth of darkness that at times must be surrendered to there is, on what seems like the other side, the lightness of being and beauty beckoning us back home again.

I know many people right at this particular time that are moving through what is called “a dark night of the soul”.  A place where old patterns and beliefs must be laid at the feet of who we have been – who we think that we are – perhaps leaving us without direction,  facing the fears that have kept us stuck, and not certain at all about what is emerging.

Some may define this place of intense feeling to be where the slate is wiped clean of any ways of past coping with life challenges.  A new way of seeing your life and the relationships within it may emerge and ask you to make choices that don’t seem to have a firm foundation underneath them, but instead demand a risk taking that leaves you rather dizzy and disoriented.  For women this is unsettling at best as aren’t we the caretakers of the world?!

600201_430092240364176_819329056_nAs I dwell in this place of darkness I feel the womb of the Earth holding me – a place where you can let it all out and not pretend anymore that you are OK; a place that won’t let you escape until you clearly see what has trapped you in endless patterns of repetition up to this exact moment; a place of deep feeling and embodiment that demands of you no less than recognizing your innate inner value and brilliance.

How many of you are being invited into this place of darkness and great healing?  You are not alone.  It is a necessary journey that so many of us are taking so that we may arise cleansed and available for the work that has been given to us since the first breath that we took.

For me the last two months have held great darkness and great light.  The two seem to be married in such a way that one never presents without the other to balance it.  This synergistic mating has taken me into walking out on a “secure” job that was not in alignment with the “me” that was asking to create in the world; losing a very dear friend abruptly and feeling abandoned and wanting to “fix” the situation; beginning a new relationship with a man that had chosen a path that was not mine; and losing the income that I had depended on to support me.

In the fertile wake of each of these challenges came finding that my value rested inside of me and realizing that no person or anything else could define that; acknowledging that my friend was having a “dark night of the soul” herself and needed her healing time in the Earth womb without me, with old patterns of abandonment and wanting to fix everything having to be examined and brought into the light; coming to a deep understanding and recognition of what I want, need and deserve in relationship with a man and saying yes to that and letting go of the “unavailable” pattern that had perpetuated for so long with a deep look at my own unavailability and why; and finally acquiring support and doing the work necessary to have a completely different relationship with money.

A Light From The Darkness by teh-artish

Deeply feeling into these places of dark and light evolve us from victim to awareness; from terror and panic to faith, trust and expectation;  from numbness and stagnation into embodiment and a glimpse of recognition into who we are in our fullest expression.  Like everything in life this constantly changes – the darkness and light interchanging with each other under the direction of something much larger than we are…..love.

Are you also taking such a journey?  You are not alone….

If Not Now, When?

603843_661859487163709_1263713306_n

For a long time now the title of this post had a certain meaning to me.  Don’t hesitate.  Seize the moment.  Take action on what you have been secretly yearning for so long now.  Life is very short and if not lived in the moment it seems even shorter.  What do I really want to do with the time left to me?

All of this still holds true,  but recently I have discovered that is just the surface of what happens when you pose this question to yourself and action is taken.  Perhaps this question arises from a place deep inside when a pattern that has run your life is asking to be dissolved.  Perhaps it is time to free yourself.

Imagine a young girl of 14 who has just lost her mother very suddenly.  Her father is devastated by her death and goes into a place of depression leaving this young girl to take care of her brother who is 4 years younger, the household, and continue to do the dance of Junior High School, all without any grief counseling or emotional support.  Consider what pattern this must have created.

Each of us has a story, a set of life circumstances that laid down a pattern(s) from which we have lived our lives in order to survive, belong and feel loved and seen.  Many of us have deeply buried the sense of wholeness of who we are, and instead have lived life through the filter of this pattern.  Then we are presented with “If not now, when?

In my case, and yes I was that young girl of 14, I learned to make others needs a priority making certain everyone was taken care of before my own needs so that I might feel  love, appreciation, importance, and a sense of safety in my world.  Over and over I played the part of selfless martyr to my patterns demand – until I woke up.

tumblr_lzgrgwYrO01qa8xm1o1_500Life usually hands us circumstances in which we can pick apart our patterns a bit at a time.  Then perhaps comes a more expansive awakening when all the threads that have held it together can no longer stay entangled.  An awakening where we cannot blame outside circumstances or others for the traumatic or toxic places/relationships we have placed ourselves in, or give excuses for not being all that we were meant to be – but instead take responsibility for freeing ourselves from the patterns that have run our lives.

It is not comfortable to be so honest with yourself and  bring the pattern out of the dark closet so that it can be seen – but it is indeed our job to simply do the work sacredly and silently into our own new awareness.  Our life then has the potential to change and open to allow a connection to the wholeness of who we are….and those with “eyes to see and ears to hear” will respond.

No dragging kicking and screaming necessary…..

Realize Your Own Magnificence

th

Many, many years ago now when I was a Neurosurgical Assistant and Neuroaugmentation Technician in Southern California I was privileged to go to a Conference on Laughter and Play on the Queen Mary docked in Long Beach.  We actually spent two entire days learning about all the ways that one can bring laughter and play into daily life moments.

I attended such events as learning to juggle with marshmellows, how to tell jokes, watching comedy in action on the stage and discovering how improv is created from within…..to the other end of the spectrum – a class on laughter in the death and dying process.  At one point I remember asking a man sitting next to me at the end of a simply hilarious comedy routine what he was writing about so seriously in his notebook.  He proceeded to tell me that he was a comedian and was taking notes on timing, jokes, etc.  Wow!  A seriously committed comedian.

I remember clearly how shifted I felt after bathing in laughter and play for two solid days.  Once I returned to my job at Scripps Clinic in San Diego, back in “real life” so to speak,  I was broadsided by the observation of the seriousness of everyone around me!   I placed joke books in my exam rooms for patients to bring some lightness into their visit, and found that they disappeared pretty quickly.  To this day I hope that it was patients taking off with them to lend some laughter medicine in dealing with a diagnosis of a brain tumor.

My point here is that we do take life way too seriously and our culture seems addicted to drama fed veraciously by our FEARS!  The fact that we are amazing and magnificent human beings housed in these beautiful (but very small compared to who we are) bodies seems often to take a back seat to our current fears or feelings of being less than.

Below you will find a video which I encourage you to watch in its entirety.  It is an interview with Anita Moorjani  who has written the book “Dying To Be Me”.  This is not only a story of a woman who discovers she has cancer and comes to death and back again….but a “resurrection” story of sorts as she recommits to a life lived fearlessly,  making choices from what brings her joy – and supported from a vast awareness of the magnificent, amazing and loving beings we truly are.

Remember who you are….live that…and watch your life and that of others around you shift and change.

This One Wild And Precious Life – What To Do With It?

“Nature gives her secrets. There is no need to grab, there is no need to kill, there is no need to break the lock. Love nature, and nature gives you her secret. Love is the key.” ~ OSHO

BREATHING as an early morning playmate to help you step into the day!

We always have a part in whatever is happening in our lives.  What an empowering principle to follow…

There is not one moment that is less or more important than another.  They ALL contribute to the fullness of who we are…

Where do you want to live from???

My deep gratitude to all those that distribute pictures and words of wisdom such as these.  So many came my way today that I couldn’t decide on just one to put up for a post.  Do reflect and act from the teachings of each moment.  Be surprised!
